Drag Race UK royalty to attend islands Pride celebration

Thursday 16 June 2022

Time to wake up and smell the Tia Kofi... 'Chaney' Islands Pride has confirmed it will be back in September, with Drag Race UK royalty set to attend the 70s-themed event.

This year's celebration will mark 50 years since the first UK Pride parade in 1972 which protested LGBTQ+ discrimination laws, with events starting on 3 September.

The main event rotates between the islands each year, and will this year be based in Guernsey - though Liberate has coordinated a variety of free events across the Channel Islands in September.

The CI Pride Parade itself is sponsored by Mourant, and will be the only dual-centred Pride event in the British Isles.

Confirmed acts for Guernsey’s main event on 3 September include headliners ‘The Freemasons’ with vocalists from their biggest hits Katherine Ellis and Amanda Wilson.

Also appearing will be UK Drag Race winner Lawrence Chaney and contestant Tia Kofi.

Day acts will perform from 17:00 to 21:00 and will be followed by an afterparty with Radio 1 DJ Dean McCoullogh.

Celebrations will culminate in Jersey on 10 September. The line-up is yet to be confirmed.

The CEO of Liberate in Guernsey said the islands have come a long way since the first Pride celebrations.

“However," Ellie Jones added, "It’s important to remember that there is still more to be done and, while we love the glitter and rainbows, there is a serious message about the importance of inclusion and providing a safe environment for islanders to express their true selves without discrimination.”
