Driver injured in hill climb crash

Friday 17 July 2015

A UK racing driver broke both of his legs in a high-speed accident at the Bouley Bay hill climb last night and is described as being "in a stable condition" in hospital this morning.

The driver – named on the organiser's website as UK racer Jos Goodyear – was injured when the car he was driving left the road, went up a bank and hit a tree.

The hospital said this morning that the driver was a UK resident in his 30s, and that he was kept in overnight and was still receiving treatment this morning.

Paramedics, States Police and honorary officers attended the scene of the crash, just on the exit of "Slemen's Corner" about midway up the hill climb course.

Simon Bertie-Roberts, Chairman of the Speed Committee of the Motorcycle and Light Car Club that organise the event, said that they trained for emergencies at motor sport events, and the processes swung into action as soon as the crash happened.

He said: "The car ran wide on a corner, left the road and went along a bank and hit a tree at the end."

An honorary policeman involved said it was only the second time in 25 years that they had called the States of Jersey Police to an accident at the hill climb, underlining the accident's seriousness.

The final runs of the day were cancelled after the crash.

The States of Jersey Police confirmed this morning that because the road was closed for the hill climb, the incident was not treated as an RTC, and there would be no investigation.

A message posted on the website of the Motorcycle and Light Car Club from Jos’ family praised the emergency response at the incident.

The message said: “Barry Goodyear and his family wish to send a very heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in today's Hill Climb.

“They would like to extend their thanks to everyone who wished them well, offered them accommodation, and helped with the incident.

“The medics and rescue crews are especially thanked for their professionalism, their care and understanding during the difficult time.

“The family have been overwhelmed by the club members and its officials they said it means a great deal to them.”
