Durrell checking legitimacy of EGM request

Monday 25 March 2024

Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust is currently reviewing a formal request from 62 members to hold an Extraordinary General Meeting, the organisation has said.

Rebel members officially called for an EGM on Thursday, following months of conflict between the charity and the group of members looking to oust its trustees.

Last week, Jersey Zoo's Operations Director Graeme Dick announced his departure – the latest in a series of high-level exits.

A group called 'We Love the Zoo' has led the campaign to collect the signatures required – at least 60 Durrell members – to call an EGM.

Signatories say they have lost confidence in the trustees' ability to maintain Gerald Durrell's legacy.

The Zoo has said they had held an in-person mediation with some of these members and representatives of the trustee board, in which they said they sought to "provide clarity on the issues at hand and find a mutually acceptable way forward". But talks collapsed when solutions could not be agreed.

A Durrell spokesperson said: "We received the requestion letter for an Extraordinary General Meeting signed by 62 individuals on Thursday 21 March.

"This is currently being reviewed internally to ensure compliance with the Trust rules."

Islanders involved with the campaign have maintained to Express that they have collected upwards of 100 signatures, with the rest kept as a reserve, should some of the ones received by the Zoo not be valid.
