Parents are going to get more information than ever before about exam performance, attendance and teacher assessments after the Education department committed to making sure that Islanders can make the best possible choices about their children’s future and the future of the Education service.
The new Education Minister Rod Bryans has backed the move to put out a range of information covering all aspects of what goes on in Island schools, saying that he wants to make sure that everyone has the proper information available to them.
Deputy Bryans – who was assistant minister at the department for three years before taking over the top job in the post-election ministerial reshuffle – said: “The aim is to give people what they want: more information about the school system that is factual, robust and in a consistent professional format.
“This data will mean parents are better informed when they discuss education issues in future. We will continue to provide more relevant information as and when it becomes available.”
The new information will mirror what the Department of Education in the UK puts out every year. The announcement by the department here comes just a fortnight after the introduction of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law.
Education’s schedule for releases is as follows:
12 February – A Level and equivalent results.
19 February – GCSE and equivalent results.
15 April – Pupil attendance and absence in schools.
5 August – School and pupil characteristics.
11 November – National Curriculum Teacher Assessments at Key Stage 1.
9 December – National Curriculum Teacher Assessments at Key Stage 2.
