Jersey students top last year's GCSE results

The waiting is over: hundreds of island students have at last received their GCSE results - and it's good news for Jersey.

903 Year 11 students took 6,924 GCSEs this summer and achieved a 99.1% success rate.

The figures released by the Education Department, which include both States and fee-paying schools, also show 72.2% of passes were Grade 4 or higher.

26.6% of passes were at Grade 7 or higher.

And 5.1% of passes were at the very highest grade possible, Grade 9.

Grade, 9, is even higher than the previous high, A*, and puts students in the top 3% nationwide.

The figures also show that grades-wise students have done better than last year.

In 2017, 24.3% of grades were A/7 or higher, this year that rose to 24.6%.

Likewise in 2017 70.8% of grades were grades4/C or above, and that’s now gone up to 77%.

Commenting on this year’s results, Senator Tracey Vallois, the Education Minister, said: "On behalf of the department I would like to congratulate each student for their hard work and commitment. GCSE results are the culmination of 12 years of education and a time to celebrate the positive efforts of the students and the support of their families.

“But we would also not be here without the dedication of our teachers. Teachers (former and current) in all our schools deserve recognition for the significant effort involved in introducing a new system and guiding our young people through these reformed GCSEs, which have more demanding content and greater focus on final exams, whilst also maintaining standards across other qualifications.”

Seán O’Regan, the Group Director of Education, Department for Children, Young People, Education and Skills, added: “I would like to congratulate the hundreds of students receiving their grades today and wish them well as they move on to the next phase of their educational journey.

"My thanks go to the teachers, parents, carers and families who have challenged and supported students to achieve these excellent results. Enjoy today and celebrate your successes.”
