End of the road for Sark's beloved one-man carting company?

Sunday 17 March 2024

One of Sark’s main haulage firms has stopped trading after a buyer for the business wasn’t found in time – but someone is still being sought to take up the reins.

Jimmy Martin has run the firm for many years, but health issues mean he’s having to take a step back and has asked for all unpaid debts to be settled by 29 March.

“It is with regret that, due to no prospective buyer comingforward to buy the carting business I am now having to cease trading as from Friday 15 March,” he said on social media at the end of February.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my customers for their loyal support over the years. This has been a very difficult decision to make but as a result of ongoing health issues I have had no other choice.”

This week Mr Martin said the search is still ongoing to continue the company which is just one among a few who provide critical haulage and freight services for residents, businesses, tourists, and major events in the island’s calendar.

“There’s plenty of opportunity for expansion,” he said.

Jimmy’s green luggage tags will be a familiar to sight to those who have made the crossing to the island from Guernsey.

Another firm, Island Deliveries, has said it will take on private clients in Jimmy’s absence, but warned it would be unable to provide additional commercial services due to limited staff members.

Sark Chamber of Commerce has now called out to the community to try and find a new operator.

“Jimmy Martin was helping so many businesses on Sark in all these years,” it said on social media.

“Please get in touch with Jimmy ASAP if you are interested in taking over his business including all equipment and customers.”
