Experts over to help mums struggling with depression

Friday 20 May 2016

A writer who suffered one of the worst types of postnatal depression after the birth of her son is in the Island this week to help Healthcare staff spot the signs of expectant mums and new mums who are struggling with perinatal mental health problems.

Elaine Hanzak's book ‘Eyes without Sparkle – a journey through postnatal illness’ has been described as a lifesaver for new mums tackling depression and she is here to tell her story.

She's being joined by motivational speaker Mike Coote, who has a background as an Army officer and in coaching, counselling and psychology. Together they are hosting workshops organised by the Health Department for Perinatal Mental Health Awareness Day and being run during Mental Health Awareness Week.

Julie Mycock, head of midwifery at Health and Social Services, said: “The arrival of a new baby should be a joyous and exciting time for a woman, her partner and their family, but sometimes, serious mental health issues arise, and these need to be recognised and addressed.

“Obviously our staff in the Maternity Unit, our community midwives and health visitors have a key role to play in that. We hope that this session will help raise awareness about perinatal mental health, and how, with the right ongoing support, it can be overcome.”

Elaine said: “We are delighted to be visiting the island and hope that we are able to inform and inspire people to make a positive difference to all the young families in their care.”
