External Relations Minister throws hat in ring for June election

Thursday 24 March 2022

External Relations Minister and former Chief Minister Ian Gorst has announced that he will be standing as an independent candidate in June’s election.

The Senator, who lives in St. Ouen, will be on the ballot paper in a new district comprising of Jersey’s largest parish, together with its smallest, St Mary, and St. Peter.

The Senator joined the States Assembly in 2005 as a Deputy for St. Clement. Six years later, he was elected Chief Minister and served for two terms as the island’s political head before being ousted by Senator John Le Fondré after the 2018 election.

The Senator – who has been one of the loudest critics of the end of the island-wide mandate – said he would focus on “policies to deliver affordable housing for Islanders, tackle the increase in the cost of living, continue to grow the economy and ensure Jersey defends its interests internationally” during the election campaign.

He said: “I am pleased to be running for Deputy of St. Peter, St. Ouen and St. Mary. Over the past four years, I have promoted and defended Jersey’s interests on the international stage, including dealing with the challenges presented by Brexit and growing our financial services industry.

"This vital work must continue, and we need States Members who can offer experience and leadership to stand up for Jersey.

“We must deal with the housing crisis and the emerging cost of living crisis, ensuring that Jersey is an affordable island for current and future generations. This requires immediate and positive action with engagement across the community.

“I am and remain an independent candidate. If elected, I will continue to argue for controlled public spending, lower taxes and less borrowing.”

The election will be held on 22 June.
