Extra staff brought in to deal with new Airport security scanner issues

Tuesday 01 August 2023

Ports of Jersey is deploying extra staff to help passengers navigate the new security process at Jersey Airport following significant "teething problems" with its new x-ray equipment.

The scanners, which were introduced at the end of July, allow liquids up to two litres in hand luggage and no longer require passengers to remove electronic devices from their bags.

However, the launch of the new security process was immediately followed by technical problems that resulted in disruption and lengthy queues for departing passengers. Some passengers reported waits of up to an hour to get through.

Providing an update this morning, a spokesperson for Ports of Jersey said: "Both new X-Ray machines were operational all weekend.

"The new system is still bedding in, and we have been working closely with the equipment supplier and their engineers to rectify teething problems.

"Data generated by the equipment is being analysed to help improve its efficiency."

"In the meantime, passengers are asked to place all small items inside or underneath their hand luggage to minimise the risk of items falling out of the trays, as this could trigger system faults," the spokesperson continued.

"We are deploying extra staff to advise passengers how to prepare for the new process."
