Jersey's first fashion magazine launches

Tuesday 06 June 2017

Local fashion and beauty lovers will be delighted to hear that a fashion magazine, named Manner and entirely produced locally, has just launched in Jersey.

Manner will be available twice a year, in the summer and in the winter, in bars, cafes, restaurants and shops around the Island.

The first issue of the magazine features articles from local contributors such as Laura Morel from nineby5 and Claire Boscq-Scott known as The Busy Queen Bee. From athleisure to dressing for success and the confessions of a 'bad feminist' the inaugural issue of Manner covers a range of subjects that should appeal to fashion enthusiasts and all Islanders alike.

Sophie Wilkinson, the woman behind 'Manner', says she "wanted to remind people that there are some fantastic shops on our little island."  A self-proclaimed fashion lover, she decided to take advantage of her experience in publishing, gained through Jersey Pages, to launch a publication in line with her personal tastes.

She told Express: "The drive behind the magazine is my love for fashion. I have always loved high-end fashion and took a leap with this really. I pretty much produced the whole magazine with the help of local writers and photographs. New York is a massive influence in what I do. I have picked some bits that I liked from other magazines and tried to imagine what would work with readers.

"I had a vision before we started; I knew what I’d like to see in a fashion magazine so it wasn’t too hard to visualize. It was a lot of work though, but I feel like we’ve achieved a high quality magazine that hopefully people will enjoy reading."

Ms Wilkinson explained the choice of title saying that it's not just about the clothes but what you do with them. She says: "I love the fact that two people can wear the same piece of clothing and have a completely different result. Manner is about style and how people present themselves."

Apart from being printed in the UK, the magazine was entirely produced locally. All the clothes, accessories or make up featured in the 108 pages of the first issue were picked from shops in Jersey, either from department stores or smaller boutiques.

Ms Wilkinson explained: "We have some great shops in Jersey, from the independent boutiques to larger high street brands. Manner is a great way to showcase what they have to offer, whilst also providing quality articles written by some of the island’s top bloggers."

While Manner showcases the best Jersey has to offer in terms of fashion, it also gave local talent the opportunity to shine. Natalia De Aveiro and Tawny Gower, two Art & Design students at Highlands College got to shoot the fashion spreads for the first issue, an experience they both describe as "amazing." Ms De Aveiro confided that her photos will be a great addition to her portfolio when she starts her Fashion Photography course at Southampton University while Ms Gower welcomed the chance to experience something different and work with different people to show local fashion.

Manner was officially launched on Friday night during an event sponsored by Centre Ville Management at the Club Hotel and Spa. The magazine is set to be published twice a year, in the summer and the winter. Its 5000 copies will be available for free in various places around the Island, including the entrance of Voisins.
