Father and son killed in nighttime hit-and-run

Monday 07 August 2023

The two pedestrians killed in a hit-and-run in Grouville over the weekend were a father and son aged 48 and 11, police officers have confirmed.

The pair had been walking along Rue de Fauvic in the direction of St. Clement’s Church when they were hit by a vehicle around 21:30 on Saturday.

A 28-year-old man – who has not been named – was arrested in St. Helier yesterday on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, and failing to stop and report the collision. The force said this morning that he was still in custody.

All Emergency Services headed to the area of the crash on Saturday night and the father and son were taken to A&E. Officers said that "great efforts were made to save them, but sadly they both died from their injuries" later in the night.

Debris from a white vehicle was found on a nearby road by investigating officers.

Following an "extensive search", a white van with "substantial damage" to its front was located on Sunday morning. The 28-year-old man was arrested afterwards.

Officers are continuing their appeal for witnesses or individuals with more information. In particular, they would like to hear from anyone living in the area with private CCTV or anyone who was driving in the area between 21:00 and 21:40 with dash-cam footage.

Anyone who may be able to help is urged to call 01534 612612, selecting option 2 then option 4.
