Faulty road surface to close Five Oaks again

Saturday 11 January 2020

Five Oaks roundabout will be closed this weekend and next after it emerged a new road surface laid only last month was faulty.

The roundabout will be closed to traffic from all directions from 13:00 this afternoon (Saturday 11 January) to 21:00 tomorrow (Sunday 12 January) and the same times on the following weekend (18 and 19 January).

The closure is due to a fault with the top surface of asphalt that was only laid last month needing to be replaced.

This weekend, workers will be removing the defective surface and next weekend they will be relaying it.

Highway Maintenance Manager, Rob Cabot, said: “We appreciate that this closure will cause disruption for islanders, but we work to specifications which need to be met.

“The costs will not be met by Government, but by our contractor who we have worked with to determine the cause and what can be learned to reduce the chance of it happening again. We apologise for any inconvenience this causes.”

Road users are advised to follow diversions around the area to avoid the roundabout.

Bus routes going through the area – numbers 3, 13, 21 and 23 - will be diverted via Grands Vaux whilst the work takes place.

In light of the roundabout closure, Liberty Bus have issued the following advice: “A shuttle bus will be in service travelling along Princes Tower Road, the top section of St Saviour’s Hill and La Grande Route de St Martin (between Five Oaks and Midland Stores).

“Passengers are advised to walk to where the bus will be diverting as shuttle times will not be as normal routes.”

They also indicate that the following stops will not be serviced during the working hours at the roundabout:

  • Five Oaks North & South;
  • Mountrow Villas;
  • Bagatelle Parade North and South;
  • Fayreway Flats North & South;
  • Chasse Brunet North & South;
  • Rue du Pont will be one way eastbound and Rue du Ponterrin will be one way westbound to aid the flow of buses.
