Fire breaks out at waste plant

Thursday 28 July 2016

A fire broke out yesterday at 4.30pm at the Energy From Waste Plant in a refuge tipping bunker.

Two fire engines were sent to the scene with nine firefighters, but the internal firefighting system had been activated by waste plant control room operators which quickly doused the fire.

Due to large amounts of smoke and reduced visibility a team of firefighters wearing breathing apparatus quickly realised the fire was under control. Firefighters using water jets dealt with the remaining hot spots within the bunker.

A spokesman for Jersey Fire and Rescue Service said: “It is important when disposing of rubbish that certain items are not mixed with general household waste.”
