An elderly couple were forced to flee their home this afternoon when a blaze broke out in their kitchen – injuring one of them as they tried to tackle it.
Two Jersey Fire and Rescue vehicles arrived at the property on Grande Route De La Cote in St. Clement around 13:15 this afternoon.
Smoke was coming from the kitchen window as the two White Watch crews arrived.
They quickly got to work tackling the blaze, and two firefighters entered the property wearing breathing equipment.
"Thankfully the owners of the property had evacuated although one had sustained burns to the hand in an attempt to stop the fire themselves," the Fire Service reported.
Watch Commander Richard Ryan praised the property owners for their "fast evacuation and for promptly calling the Emergency Services.
He also reminded issued a reminder to islanders: "...If you are met by a fire wherever you are, please don't attempt to tackle it yourselves and get out, stay out and call 999 as soon as possible."
