Firefighters issue warning after bonfire gets out of control

A man suffered burns to his arm after a bonfire got of control yesterday.

At 6.10pm four firefighters were called out after receiving calls saying a bonfire was out of control and had started to spread to nearby bushes and furze – underlining the dangers involved during the summer season.

The crews found approximately 300 square metres of grassland area was alight and the owner had suffered slight burns to his forearm while attempting to fight the fire prior to their arrival.

The blaze was quickly extinguished with two water jets and the man was given first aid at the scene.

Commander Richard Ryan said: “The gentleman underestimated just how quickly these things can get out of control especially when burning vegetation as it can be very dry and cause fire to spread quickly. If you have green waste take it to La Collette waste and recycling centre to avoid having an unfortunate accident by lighting a bonfire that may get out of hand.”
