Firefighters rescue dog after 50 metre cliff fall

Wednesday 09 March 2016

Firefighters were called into action to rescue a dog that fell down cliffs at Portelet yesterday afternoon.

The dog – Webster – was being walked by his owner when he slipped and fell 50 metres to a precarious position on the cliffs.

Firefighters were called and a rope rescue unit was deployed – one firefighter, Chris Bulmer, was lowered in a harness to where Webster had landed, just 30 metres from the sea.

Firefighter Bulmer secured the dog to a harness and the pair were winched to safety by the crew above.

Watch Commander Richard Ryan said that Webster’s owner had done the right thing by calling the emergency services, and not placing herself in danger by trying to rescue him.

He said: “Fortunately this incident was resolved successfully, with Webster reunited with his owner, however, we strongly recommend keeping dogs on their leads when out walking on cliff paths.”
