Jersey celebrates A-level success

Thursday 18 August 2016

The overall pass rate for Jersey’s A-level results published today is 99.5%, which is up on both 2015 and 2014, and above the 98.1% for England. The percentage of entries resulting in grades, A*, A and B at 54.5% is higher than results for England, at 52.8%.

This year a total of 485 Jersey pupils were entered for 1348 examinations. A total of 6.8% of Jersey students passed with an A* grade, while a further 18% got an A grade.

Education Minister Deputy Rod Bryans said: “I am delighted to congratulate our sixth form students who have worked with such effort and focus to achieve these A-level results. They have been supported in their efforts by the dedicated work and encouragement of their teachers and families and will now be able to move forward with a variety of exciting study and career options.”

Beaulieu Convent students passed their A-levels with a 100% success rate, with the school saying on early analysis it’s the highest ever value added scores by a significant degree.

Headmaster Chris Beirne said: “I am thrilled that our students have been able to achieve such impressive academic results alongside all of their other accomplishments, which enable them to leave Beaulieu fully equipped for the future.”

Highlands College students are also celebrating. Their equivalent of A-levels are called Advanced General Qualifications, and success rates are up 5% to 96%.

The college says “an impressive 465 A-level equivalent results have been achieved by the students this year across all BTEC subjects with 63% of students achieving distinction* or distinction grades (equivalent to A* / A at A-level).  Meanwhile, 74% of the 27 CACHE childcare students achieved the equivalent of three A*s or three As at A level.”

Principal Steve Lewis said: “Almost 200 young people in Jersey took an Advanced General Qualification at Highlands College this year. These are hands-on qualifications which students have to work hard to achieve and demonstrate that they are capable of independent learning. Highlands students have done better than most of their UK counterparts with achievement rates of 96% and high grades. These students have had their results since early July, so are already ahead of the game in securing their place at a University or gaining employment on island.”
