Former Dragon’s Den star recognises Jersey beauty salon on twitter

The owner of a small beauty salon in St Clement hopes to see a boost in business after being recognized on twitter by British entrepreneur Theo Paphitis.

Pennyfeathers beat off stiff competition from thousands of other small businesses and was chosen as one of the retail magnate’s favourite small businesses this month on Small Business Sunday.

Every Sunday between 5pm and 7.30pm small business owners have to sell their business to Mr Paphitis in just one tweet. Each week he chooses his favourite six to re-tweet. As he has more than 400,000 followers, it’s a boost for any business and Pennyfeathers is the first Jersey business to grab his attention in this way.

Describing the  #SBS initiative on his website Mr Paphitis says: "I admire people who have passion and energy. If you cannot bore your friends to death about your own small business then something is seriously wrong. I was struck by the number of business owners on Twitter who wanted to tell me about their new products and services. Small Business Sunday was born so that people have a specific time slot to tweet and can pitch their 'sell' directly to me.”

He says the benefits of getting picked range from increased Twitter followers to positive media publicity and for many, increased sales.

Mr Paphitis says: “I know I have been lucky in business and I am keen now to spread goodwill to others, of course not forgetting that very often, you make your own luck by making use of every opportunity."

Owner Penny Downes said: “This is a huge achievement for my business, the Island and my industry. “

Pennyfeathers has been open since 2007 and offers a range of beauty treatments which as her winning tweet says is….”putting the treat back in a treatment.”
