Four people and two dogs saved at sea

A group of people and their pets were caught off guard today by the incoming tide.

The incident happened at 11:00 as the Fire inshore Rescue Boat collected the people, who had been walking out to Seymour Tower.

A member of the public called Jersey Coastguard after realising the group were going to be cut off by the rising tide. 

The rescue boat was put to sea at Seymour slip and collected the group, who insisted they had checked the tide table and sought advice from a local fisherman regarding visiting Seymour Tower. However, they had clearly misjudged the tidal movements as it was an hour and three-quarters after low tide when they were cut off from shore.

A Fire Service spokesman said: “Careful preplanning is vital when visiting Jersey’s offshore towers. Always carry a means of calling for help, tell someone where you are going and when you will be back and it is always advisable to leave yourself a good safety margin of time to ensure your visit has a good and safe ending.”
