Deputy pushes for free 'Hopper' bus for Springfield gym users

Tuesday 23 May 2023

Active Card holders travelling to Springfield gym may be able to make use of a free town 'Hopper' bus service in future, if a St. Helier Deputy gets his way.

Reform Jersey's Rob Ward said that the move of sports facilities from Fort Regent to Springfield has been met with an "increased pressure" on parking around Springfield stadium.

As a result, Deputy Ward is asking the States Assembly to approve a plan that would see the Infrastructure Minister work with LibertyBus on launching a trial until 31 December that would provide free access to the town 'Hopper' bus for Active Card holders.

Deputy Ward said: "To address some of these travel pressures, this proposition seeks to enable free access to the hopper bus that stops outside the facility to active card users.

"This is a significant number of people who will access for gym and wider exercise facilities."

He added: "This initial period of around seven months will give some time for alternative travel plans to be created and promoted.

"This may mean an extension or permanent provision of this free facility. This can be decided following an analysis of its impact."

Fort Regent gym closed earlier this month as part of longer-term plans to "decant the Fort in preparation for future redevelopment", with many gym users bemoaning the new Springfield facilities as inadequate.

Deputy Ward's proposition is due to be debated next month.
