Free legal advice for women

Friday 03 January 2014

Law firm Viberts is giving free legal consultations at the Jersey Women’s Refuge.

The firm has agreed to commit two hours of staff time to the refuge for free every two weeks to help women, even if they aren't living there. The advice could cover anything from divorce issues and matrimonial problems, through to child custody and finance.

Jersey Women's Refuge manager Lorna Kearney said: 'Most women are too scared of taking any formal steps at the start of the process. They are confused by their situation and what the legal implications of a break up may mean for them, particularly when they have been threatened by their partner or husband. This initiative will help to inform them within the safe environment of the refuge.’

Head of the Family Law Practice Advocate Rose Colley said: ‘Women who have been forced to seek shelter at the refuge find themselves in a vulnerable position. They are facing an immediate future of uncertainty and insecurity. If we can offer crucial advice and reassurance at such a sensitive time it can only be a positive thing.’

Women can call anytime day or night on the free phone number 0800 735 6836, alternatively, they can meet up with a support worker at a safe location.
