French nationals given help to take part in European elections

Monday 11 March 2024

French nationals living in Jersey are being urged not to miss out on the chance to establish a proxy vote for this year's European elections.

The French Consulate in London have announced they will be visiting Jersey on Monday 25 and Tuesday 26 March in order to establish proxy votes and add citizens to the register of French nationals living outside the country.

Vote par procuration

The European elections are taking place on 9 June this year, and French nationals living in Jersey can get involved by establishing a proxy vote (vote par procuration).

The election will see them choose their representatives in the European Parliament.

French citizens living outside of France will also get the opportunity to be added to the country's register of French citizens living outside of France. This register allows citizens easier access to formal processes - like getting ID documents, registering to vote, or requesting education grants, for example.

Renewing ID cards and passports

As well as establishing proxy votes and joining the register, French citizens living in Jersey will be able to renew their ID documents - both ID cards and passports - during the Consular visit.

However, these places are limited and have to be booked in advance. The most vulnerable citizens - those who will struggle most to travel off the island to access consular services - will be given appointments as a priority, and all other slots will be booked on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Appointments can be booked on the London General Consulate website, or by contacting Maison de la Normandie et de la Manche.

Census of the French community

The French Honorary Consulate in the island, working together with Maison de la Normandie et de la Manche, has also announced that they will be taking a census of people in Jersey with French citizenship – whether they hold only French nationality or are dual citizens.

This means they can be kept up-to-date on any events, Maison de la Normandie et de la Manche has said.

"This census is of the utmost importance in order for the French Consular Agency to clearly understand and establish the needs of the French community residing in Jersey."

Citizens should contact Maison de la Normandie et de la Manche, at 71 Halkett Place or contact info@maisondelanormandie.com or 01534280110.
