The funeral of a "generous soul", who was found dead in a St. Malo harbour used by Jersey leisure sailors, will take place this afternoon.
French fire and rescue service officials recovered the body of missing Frenchman Rodolphe Gaudin on the morning of 3 January in the Bassin Vaubin harbour, a popular spot for Channel Islands and UK leisure sailors adjacent to the ferry terminal.
Mr Gaudin had last been seen in the early hours of Tueday 1 January in the marina where his boat was moored, French newspaper Ouest France reported.
The 42-year-old’s disappearance sparked a social media campaign to find him.
Initial searches were made on Wednesday 2 January. His body was recovered when rescue divers returned to search the area the following day.
Authorities said his death was the likely result of an accidental drowning.
Mr Gaudin’s funeral will take place this afternoon at the Ormaux Crematorium. In a moving message released ahead of the funeral, his family wrote: “Rodolphe loved and feared the sea equally. He said that it could make us live some of the most beautiful moments, as well as the worst, but he knew how to join it to go far.”
They added that the ashes of Mr Gaudin, who was described as a “generous soul nuanced with modesty and humility”, would be scattered at sea.
