GALLERY: Beaulieu students' creative spirits 'revealed'

Wednesday 07 July 2021

From the spirit of the natural environment, to exotic animals, insecurities, body language and hidden truths, students from Beaulieu have explored a variety of themes in their work in the last year.

‘Revealed’ celebrates the work of Year 11,12 and 13 students from Beaulieu School’s Art, Textiles and Photography classes.

In total, the work of 39 students is on display in the Innovation Centre of Jubilee Block.

The school said that in the past year, the creative students had worked “tirelessly” to produce exciting and expressive work, in spite of the difficult times that they have found themselves in.

“They have endured periods of lockdown, isolation, online learning and working in face masks,” they said.

“Through all this, our students have continued to work hard with true Beaulieu determination and resilience, producing work to a very high standard.”

Under the guidance of Debbie Jones, Leah Holliday and Sacha Goodwin the students have explored a range of subjects of their own choice including hidden identity, performance, weather, emotional crisis, body language, texture and natural forms, to name a few, as well as researching to reveal the meaning behind the words.”

“Students are given a wide range of topics to choose from to ensure they have the opportunity to work to their strengths, pursuing artists, designers, textile artists and photographers that inspire them in their research,” the teachers explained.

“At Beaulieu we feel it is important that we do not have a prescriptive style, but allow the students to develop into the artists and designers that they are meant to be.”

While themes such as identity and social issues are always very popular among students, teachers said they are continually “surprised and inspired” by how the students are always exploring “new and relevant themes”.

“This year has been no different,” they said. “Students this year have looked at ‘the spirit of the natural environment’, ‘exotic animals’, ‘human insecurities’, ‘body language’ and ‘unveiling the hidden truth,’ to name a few. Students choose subjects that they are passionate about and want to explore further, in depth.

"As their creative teachers, we are enormously proud of the hard work, resilience and talent of our students. They have coped with true Beaulieu spirit and maturity through a difficult two years to produce exemplary work that deserved to be seen and celebrated.

“We could not be prouder of them.”
