Garage fire tackled in St Brelade

Wednesday 19 October 2016

The owner of a house in St Brelade needed help from his neighbours, and the fire service, to tackle a blaze in his garage earlier this evening.

Just before 16:30, a couple smelt smoke, but assumed it was a bonfire in a nearby garden - ten minutes later they were shocked to discover the fire was actually in their own garage, with smoke pouring out of the door.

When they checked in the garage, they found a work bench and storage cupboard well alight.

The Fire Service say the owner quickly alerted his neighbour, who then tried to tackle the blaze with a hose, while the property's owner went back into the garage to remove petrol cans and an LPG cylinder, before they exploded.

They tried to tackle the fire, but it was too fierce, and needed two fire fighters to bring it under control. They also called an ambulance as a precaution, but no one was injured.
