Islanders are being urged not to smoke around Snow Hill after “small amounts” of gas were detected in the area.
Some islanders noticed 'no smoking' signs appearing around Snow Hill on Hill Street last week.
When asked why the signs had been put up by Express, the Infrastructure Department revealed that it was because "small traces of gas" had been detected by electronic equipment at Snow Hill during what they described as a "routine investigation of the sewage network".
"As a result, the sewer is being vented and we continue to monitor the area," officials said.
"Precautionary signage was installed at Snow Hill and this will remain in place until those small traces are no longer detected."
The Department did not specify the type of gas detected or the potential risks associated with it.
However, they are advising people to refrain from smoking in the area until further notice.
It comes amid maintenance works ongoing in the large underground void beneath Snow Hill known as the cavern.

Measuring 38 metres tall, 80 metres long and 17 metres wide, the cavern is used as a storage tank for overflows of sewage and water from the main sewerage system during storms, preventing it from spilling out into St Aubin's Bay.
Those works have been ongoing since around May.
