Jersey students have today been celebrating their GCSE exam results after two years of disruption, with the majority of their studies having taken place under the challenging circumstances of the pandemic.
Schools have praised the "hard work, resilience and tenacity" of their students, whose results will decide the next important decisions about their post-16 education and careers.
Students in Jersey once again achieved higher GCSE results compared to students in England, with 81.6% of GCSE and IGCSEs graded at 4-9 (C and above), and 32.0% at the highest grades 7-9 (A/A*)
The Minister for Children and Education, Deputy Inna Gardiner, said: “Their achievements are even more impressive considering the challenges they have faced over the past two years, and I would also like to thank teachers and parents, who have continued to support young people through adifficult and disruptive period.”
JCG's Principal, Carl Howarth, commented on the school's GCSE results: “Our students have absolutely excelled themselves not only academically but as remarkable and resilient young people. They have demonstrated incredible tenacity through this turbulent time combined with our continuous and unfaltering belief in them.
"It is important to remember that this cohort was in the final stage of Year 9 when we went into the confusion of lockdown. Our students and staff had to dig deep and pivot quickly to new ways of doing things especially during their Year 10, the first year of their GCSE study.
"Their shared approach and ultimate success of online and in-person learning was critical. This meant that no learning has been lost. Our students and staff have shown great agility in overcoming any obstacles and have thrived. These stellar results clearly demonstrate the depth of care, belief and academic excellence; our students have shown what can be achieved with positivity in the face of adversity.
"To put their achievement in context, these results are even better than the high point of Centre Assessed Grades (CAGs) in 2021 and an uplift of 15% on the last formal set of examinations in 2019.
"81% of all grades were at the highest Grades of 9–7, with 32% of all grades being awarded the very highest Grade 9. The average set of grades was 5x Grade 8 and 5x Grade 7. At a time when, nationally, we are seeing a reduction in the number of the highest grades, this is a remarkable demonstration of sustained academic excellence. We are bucking the national trend.
"We are so proud of each of our students, staff and parents and the incredible partnership shown throughout this period. At times, life has been tough for each of us. However, the support and kindness given to one another was instrumental in reaching these new heights of personal success. More than any grades, it is this achievement of character that inspires me most. You did it!
"I cannot wait to welcome our students and staff back in September and look forward to meeting the many new students who will be joining our sixth form.”
Victoria College students sat their GCSEs this summer across a range of subjects. A total of 43% received grades between 7-9 (which is the equivalent to previous A*-A grades) and 94% achieving grades 9-4 (the equivalent to previous A*-C grades).
Headteacher, Dr Gareth Hughes said: "I am delighted that our Year 11 students have today received an excellent set of results and I warmly congratulate them their efforts over what has been a difficult two years.
"Academic results are very much a team effort, and these results are testament to not only the hard work of the students, but also to my dedicated and caring staff for their fantastic academic and pastoral assistance to the Year 11s, and of course to our wonderful parental body for their ongoing support.
"Within the headline figures are many individual success stories and these GCSE qualifications will set up our students superbly for their next steps, whether that is to join us in our Sixth Form or to pursue other educational or career pathways. I am hugely proud of each and every one of our Year 11s."
Hautlieu Headteacher, Nick Falle said: "We were already proud of this group of Hautlians and of course we feel that even more acutely today with the release of an outstanding set of GCSE results. Progressing into GCSE study following a significantly disrupted two plus years due to Covid was an unenviable task but our students have risen to the challenge with their characteristic good humour, ambition and determination.
"Despite the exam regulators warning of a significant decrease in grades from the last two years of teacher assessed GCSE outcomes our students have continued to secure fabulous performances. This success has come across all areas of study including numerous subjects where the percentage of students achieving grades 9 to 7 has been well over 60%, and with over 95% of students achieving grades 9 to 4 including English Language and Mathematics (with appeals still pending).
"Reflecting on today’s celebrations we must also thank our parents, teachers and support staff for their critical roles in enabling today’s successes."
Beaulieu is celebrating a set of excellent GCSE and BTEC results today, with just under 40% of all examinations taken achieving a 9-7 Grade and double the number of Grade 9s achieved when compared with 2019, the last time traditional examinations were sat.
Beaulieu is also delighted to have maintained a consistently high value added score across the board, with students achieving an average of 1.5 grades higher than predicted, and a number of students vastly exceeding expectations in terms of grades achieved.
Andrea Firby, Head of School at Beaulieu, said: “We strive to help every child in our care reach their full potential, wherever their area of interest may lie. I am delighted that we have seen such strong results for our GCSE and BTEC students, despite the continued challenges of Covid-19, and I’m particularly thrilled for those who have more than exceeded expectations.”
Mrs Firby added: “We are extremely proud of all our students’ achievements following their hard work and determination. These results continue to build upon the School’s excellent academic reputation and I am very grateful to our supportive parents and our conscientious and dedicated team of staff.”
Headteacher Stuart Hughes commented: "To keep it short and sweet, we are absolutely delighted with our Year 11 exam results! Another new record for the school! Well done to all students, your hard work has paid off!
"It was an honour to see so many smiling faces during the collection of results this morning, especially when you consider the many and significant challenges that have been thrown at our students over the last two years.
"Thank you to parents, and colleagues, for your continued support in making this happen for our students.
"Good luck to all students in your next adventure."
