Georgina Hopkins, LiveLifeFitness: Five things I would change about Jersey

Friday 08 March 2019

When she's not putting out flames, she's on a mission to make Jersey healthier and more active - one islander at a time.

Owner of 'LiveLifeFitness', Georgina Hopkins (30) has been working in the fitness industry for over six years, focusing on personal training and rehabilitation, while also working as a retained firefighter.

Amid a busy schedule which includes four different jobs and wedding preparations, Georgina has taken the time to slow down long enough to write about five things that need a little rehab' in Jersey...

1. Help for cancer patients to get active again

We need a Permanent Cancer Rehabilitation Specialist role within the hospital that is funded by the Government of Jersey. Currently all classes are funded by charities.

We know that one in two islanders will suffer from cancer; therefore, we need the Government of Jersey to get behind the initiative to give those who have been diagnosed with cancer support to get back active within the community.

2. Include exercise in treatment pathways

Every cancer patient would be referred into my exercise classes.

This should be part of the pathway before treatment and after in order to increase life expectancy, dealing with the treatment or surgery more efficiently and effectively.

3. Support for self-employed sole traders

I have had to learn so much myself with no support or encourage from Jersey on social, tax for example and how to develop my company further. I have reached out for help and either had to go back several times in order to get the right answer or been charged for advice.

Advice should be free, as Jersey should want to encourage the hard work, commitment and enthusiasm it takes to be self employed.

4. Affordable direct flights to Europe

Cabin fever affects many islanders, which in turn affects their mental health and productivity.

If it was more affordable to go off-island, many would be able to escape, increasing a more positive mindset and life experiences.

5. Weddings... Why so expensive?

I am currently planning my own wedding. It sickens me each time I hear a quote or how much it is to move a chair, etc.

The wedding business has become a joke! As soon as you put 'wedding' in front of something, companies add a zero on! This is unfair on young couples starting out.
