You can get warmed up in the Royal Square this lunchtime when around forty different soups go on sale to help the Island’s homeless.

The annual Soup Kitchen is back and will be raising money for the 86 Islanders who are depending on the Shelter Trust to put a roof over their head this Christmas - the highest numbers they have helped to home.

The Soup Kitchen has been an annual event for the last fifteen years and one of the main fundraisers for the charity. For the last three years it has raised over £10,000 to support the homeless.

Once again local celebs will be serving up hot soup made by some of the Island’s Michelin-starred chefs with some crusty bread to go with it. 38 different types of soup are going on sale and as well as some new recipes there are some new contributors too including Jersey Hospice Care who are rustling up some leek and potato.

Shelter Trust Trustee Richard Robins said: "We have 86 people sleeping in our four different sites at the moment, it's the highest it's ever been, possibly because we are more successful in getting people off the streets."

Around one in four of the Islanders dependent on the charity are under 25 and living at the charity's new home for young adults that opened in St Mark's Road last year. The numbers of young women needing their help has more than doubled.

The money raised from the soup will help make sure everyone gets a proper Christmas dinner this year.

Around fifty Islanders spent Saturday night sleeping rough to raise money and awareness for other homeless charities in the Island.
