An app developed in the Channel Islands to help people "press the pause button" on suicidal thoughts has won a global digital award.

Developed by psychotherapist John Halker and local creative agency Oi, Better Stop Suicide won the Platinum Award in the Health and Wellness category at the global DotCOMM Awards.

Launched in February 2019 on Apple and Android, the Better Stop Suicide app is intended to help people who are experiencing suicidal thoughts, “buying time to get further help and support".

The app offers several features, including calming audio files, quick access to key phone contacts, and allowing people to record a life-saving message to themselves.

“It’s important to remember that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem, and a calm person’s thinking brain knows that," Mr Halker said.

Testimonials from users of the app explain how it has helped them through difficult periods.

One said: "Thank you for making this app. I was very sad and tired. Did not want to die but wanted everything to stop. I used this app and had a good sleep and talked to my mum. It saved my life."

Another added: "When I was really down it helped me at just the right moment."

Oi and Mr Halker are currently developing more apps under the 'Better' brand to help tackle other mental health problems, such as alcohol addiction and drugs, and physical illnesses like obesity and sleep disorders.
