The 163rd Gorey Regatta is due to go ahead next month, with 19 trophies up for grabs - subject to certain adaptations to ensure it follows physical distancing rules.
Taking place on the 11 and 12 July, competing boats will either be sailed single-handed or crewed by members from the same household. Only larger yachts, where distancing can be enforced, will be able to have ‘mixed’ crews from different households.
Only participants from Jersey will be allowed to enter.
Normally, the regatta is accompanied by various social events, but these will not be able to go ahead due to the pandemic restrictions.
The prize-giving dinner will most likely be held towards the end of the year if the distancing guidelines are eased.
The Gorey Regatta Association Committee considered various options for the event, but decided to go ahead with a ‘sail only’ regatta due to the fact that local sailing clubs have started racing again under the current distancing guidelines.
Yachts of many different classes will be taking part, including cruisers, racers, dinghies and multihulls, and there will be fierce competition for the 19 trophies up for grabs.
The Association Captain Justin Horton said: “The event will be limited to ‘reasonable weather conditions.’ We will be abiding by the current covid-19 guidelines and monitoring them should they change.”
The closing date for entries to the Regatta is 3 July.
