Plan for £2m-a-year "targeted" covid vaccine scheme

Friday 03 November 2023

A “targeted” ongoing covid vaccination programme which would cost £2 million a year will be created, if Ministers get politicians' backing for their plans.

Draft legislation for an amendment to the Island’s Health Insurance Law was published this week.

The new regulations would allow the continuation of a taxpayer-funded vaccination programme for Covid-19 which would be aimed at "targeted groups".

Proposals for this ongoing funding through the Health Insurance Fund were originally included the Government Plan, released last month.

Due to be debated on 12 December, along with this amendment to the law, the Plan stated: "As the central funding for covid-19 costs comes to a close, the opportunity has been taken to review the organisation and delivery of a range of vaccination services, including an ongoing covid-19 vaccination programme to targeted groups.

"Details of the new service will be finalised in coming months and the Health Insurance Law will be amended to allow these costs to be met from the Fund. Legislation to this end will be lodged to allow for debate immediately after the Government Plan debate."

If the legislation passes the States Assembly, then it can be expected to come into force before the end of the year.

The Health Insurance Fund receives allocations from Social Security contributions from employers and working-age adults and supports the wellbeing of Islanders by subsidising GP visits, the cost of prescriptions and other primary care services.
