Greggs to close in Jersey

Wednesday 10 August 2016

The two Greggs shops in Jersey are to close just eighteen months after opening, with the franchise owner citing the high cost of getting products to the Island.

SandpiperCI, says the Greggs brand - which is the largest bakery in the UK - has had limited success in the Island, “...mainly due to high delivery charges and costs," and that it’s ending its agreement with the company.

Sandpiper goes on to say it’ll be replacing the brand with an in-house bakery to serve the local food-on-the-go market.

‘The Bakery’ will be launched at the end of the month and so no redundancies are expected. The new company will provide similar products to Greggs including freshly made sandwiches, snacks, food and drinks.

The first of three Greggs stores in Jersey opened in Halkett Street in January 2015.

Shortly afterwards two other shops opened - another town shop – at Colomberie – and one at Red Houses in St Brelade. But in October 2015 the company closed its Colomberie outlet.

Earlier this month Greggs’ said its national revenues for the past six months were up 6% to £422million, whilst like-for-like sales in the period rose 3.8%. Greggs sell more than a million products in the UK every day, and have been trading for 75 years. They employ 20,000 people across nine regional bakeries and 1,700 shops in the UK.

The list of brands under the Sandpiper umbrella includes: Marks and Spencer, Checkers Xpress, Food Hall, Island Shopper, Wine Warehouse, Iceland, Costa Coffee, Jack Wills, Crew Clothing, Moss Bros, Hotel Chocolat, Greggs, Pasty Presto and George.
