Jersey's Lunar New Year Festival is set to return for the second time this year, kicking off the Year of the Dragon with performances, workshops, pop-up food markets and more.

​Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year and Spring Festival, is celebrated in East-Asian communities around the world.

For the first time last year, the Creative Island Partnership​ hosted a Lunar New Year Festival in Jersey.

It is set to return this weekend to celebrate the beginning of the Year of the Dragon – a symbol of prosperity, luck, hope and opportunity.

The festival begins today and will continue for the next two weeks. 

Here's what to expect...

Saturday 10 February

Pu'er Tea experience with The Yard and the Jersey​ Museum​ - Pop into The Yard and Jersey Museum to experience a little bit of China's traditional Tea Culture.

You can sample some earthy Pu'er Tea with a side of tasty Custard Bao Bun, and enjoy a small exhibition about tea culture, mountain tea plantations and tea leaf processing. This experience will continue throughout the whole two-week festival.

High Street Performance - A group of performers will demonstrate Dragon Dancing, Lion Dancing, Tai Chi and Kung Fu to mark the start of the Lunar New Year Festival.

In the Royal Square, there will be a Tai Chi workshop at 11:00, and a Kung Fu workshop at at 13:15.

Sunday 11 February

Tai Chi Demonstration - At 10:00, a group from China will host relaxing Tai Chi sessions in the Royal Square.

Opening Ceremony and Tasty Asia Food Market - The Central Market will welcome in the New Year with vibrant cultural performances from visiting dancers, tasty local eats from pop-up food stalls and artisan products from island vendors.

There will be an eye-dotting ceremony at midday, followed by animated dance performances.

French Lane will be filled with pop-up food stalls and the Central Market will be open until 16:00 with food, local products, free kids' activities and facepainting.

Halkett Place road will be closed to traffic from 12:00-15:00 to accommodate this event.

Saturday 17 February

Inner Mongolia Performance Troupe - On Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 February, the Freedom Centre will play host to a troupe of 26 cultural performers from the Inner-Mongolia Autonomous Region of China.

On the evening of Saturday 17 and the afternoon of Sunday 18 February, the troupe will present 90-minute cultural performances combining traditional songs, dance, craftsmanship and instrumental music.

The event is free but tickets can be reserved HERE.

Sunday 18 February

Artisan Market and Tasty Asia Food - For the second weekend, Jersey Central Market presents local food vendors and artisans at a festival pop-up event.

The market will once again be open from 12:00-16:00.

Monday 19 February

Inner-Mongolia Performance Troupe School Visits - Following two public performances, the Inner-Mongolia troupe will be visiting a number of local schools to engage students with demonstrations of performances and crafts.

Saturday 24 February

Children's art drop-in session - To mark the last day of the festival, local artist Kelly Eastwood will host a two-hour drop-in session at the Jersey Library for children to craft their own abstract dragon masks from 10:00.

​Jersey Tea Company tour - Visit the Jersey Tea Company Farm for a tour through the scenic tea fields of Jersey, where you can indulge in the finest teas.
