Man (41) convicted of hotel rape and sex assaults

Thursday 11 April 2019

A man has been found guilty of raping and sexually assaulting a woman in a local hotel.

Brett Kean (41) has been convicted of one charge of rape and two charges of sexual assault after a woman accused him of attacking her whilst she was staying at the Hotel Sandranne, St Helier, in 2016.

Kean did not react when the Foreman of the jury read out their verdict. However, after the jury had left the Courtroom, he could be heard whispering to his lawyer: “Doesn’t surprise me.”

Having heard three days of evidence, the decision from the jurors was unanimous after just under two hours of deliberation.

Throughout the course of the trial, the Court heard testimony from Kean’s victim – only referred to as Miss X to protect her identity – who recalled how her rapist had made “disgusting” comments after he had assaulted her.

She broke down briefly after telling the jury that Kean had said, whilst girls always tell men to ‘stop’, there was no need to until they began to scream.

Kean maintained his innocence throughout, even taking to the stand to deny the charges, but he has now been convicted on all counts.

Having heard the verdict, the Deputy Bailiff Tim Le Cocq – who presided over the trial – informed that as a result of Kean’s conviction, he will be automatically placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register.

It was heard during the trial that the pair had engaged in consensual sex whilst they were both staying at the Hotel Sandranne and that, since this encounter, Kean had become “obsessed” with her, calling her constantly and knocking on her hotel room door in the early hours.

The Police have praised the victim's bravery in speaking out against her attacker. They said: "The victim must be commended for her bravery in coming forward. She has demonstrated great strength and commitment throughout the investigation."

Having been convicted, Kean has been taken back into custody until he is sentenced on 19 June at 14:30 before the ‘Superior Number’ – a panel of five or more Jurats who only assemble to hear the most serious of cases.
