Singers across the island will be exclaiming "hallelujah," as Jersey’s ‘lockdown choir’ have announced an online performance of Handel’s Messiah.
Aureole’s ‘Come and Sing and Play Messiah’ will take place entirely over Zoom, bringing a selection of both amateur and professional Jersey soloists coming together.
The performance, which has already sold tickets in Italy, Finland, the UK, Ireland and Jersey, will raise money for Age Concern Jersey and Jersey’s NSPCC. The Aureole choir, which was formed over lockdown to keep Jersey singing, has already raised £3,000 for charity, and they are hoping this event will raise an extra £1,000.
The singing will take place on 13 December at 18:00, and Aureole is inviting anyone who wants to lend a voice or an instrument to the music to get involved – everyone’s mic will be on mute at first, so it will be up to those tuning in to decide if they want to switch on and join in.
A spokesperson for Aureole said: “Jersey’s Covid guidance has remained intransigent. There has been no return to singing of any kind, other than one to one lessons, throughout this period.
“Charities are deprived of their income from Christmas concerts and carol singing, choirs are on their knees as members report loss of vocal form, and there will be no carols this Christmas. We are hoping to bring singers together and make an event that will bring a sense of community to our singers and bring fun, music and laughter to our Christmas."
