Islanders are being invited to take part in a debate in the States Chamber next month as part of an initiative that aims to engage the public in politics and encourage potential candidates to stand in the next election.
Held on 28 September, the ‘People’s Debate’ will focus on Jersey's net zero carbon emissions target.
Participants will deliver speeches and vote on how ambitious the island should be in achieving this goal, as well as which lifestyle and legislative changes should be prioritised.
Although the vote results will not directly influence policy, the event is designed to give participants an insight into the decision-making process and to involve them in a key issue facing the island.
The Bailiff of Jersey, Sir Timothy Le Cocq, will be the presiding officer for the debate which is being held as part of Jersey's fifth annual Democracy Week.
This event runs from Monday 23 to Sunday 29 September, and aims to to inspire and inform islanders of all ages and stages of political engagement.
Sir Timothy said: "The People's Debate is a real opportunity to experience being a States Member for a day.
"I'd urge anyone who has ever wondered at how such decisions are made in Jersey, to apply to take part in this event."
The Bailiff added he hopes the event will attract islanders from all demographics.
"Our political process and democracy is at its best when all voices are heard," he said.
The debate will take place on the anniversary of the Corn Riots, a historic act of resistance against rising food prices in 1769 that led to significant legislative reforms and paved the way for a fairer society.
Applications to participate in the People's Debate are open until 4 September and can be submitted via the States Assembly website or in person at Morier House.
The event will be live-streamed, and the public gallery will be available for those who wish to watch the debate in-person.
