Meals on wheels is looking for volunteers to dish up and deliver food to people around Jersey.
Meals on wheels is a program that has been going on in Jersey since 1962, which delivers meals to people at home who cannot purchase, or prepare, their own meals. They provide a two course meal, a main and a desert, from Tuesdays to Fridays. The meals cost about £3.60 each.
They deliver to about 95 people a week and offer a two-week 'rotating' menu.
The food is made at the hospital kitchen in St. Peter and delivered to Overdale to be dished up into single portions, which drivers pick up between 11:00 and 11:30. There are special meals for people with dietary requirements, these meals are marked with a label to make sure the is no mix up.
The most common users of the service are single, elderly people, but they also help people who struggle to cook, families who need a bit of support, and people who have just come out of hospital.
They are looking for volunteers for deliveries, and 'plating up' the food. They need to be able to drive to deliver the meals, for a few hours every other week, and anyone interested in volunteering can email here.
Terry and Angela Le Sueur have been volunteering together for deliveries for meals on wheels for 5 years.
They said: “It’s a part of peoples social duty to help when they can. We think it’s good to visit people who sometimes don’t have anyone else to talk to all day. They enjoy the company of having someone delivering the meals to them, and we enjoy talking to them."
