Jersey's pubs will be allowed to open late to screen World Cup matches from Brazil this summer.
The Bailiff’s Office has agreed to take applications for permits from pub landlords who want to open late to show the games, and will be consulting with the parishes and the police about how to sort it out.
But Jersey will not go as far as the UK in relaxing licensing rules – pubs and bars there are all being allowed to open until 1 am when an England game kicks off at 8 pm or later, and can also apply for licences for other matches.
An extension would be needed for any pub that wanted to screen England’s opening game against Italy, which kicks off at 11 pm on 14 June. No extensions would be needed for the games against Uruguay (8 pm UK time on 19 June) or Costa Rice (5 pm UK time on 24 June). In the perhaps unlikely event of England reaching the final, the match will be played at 8 pm on July 13th in Rio.
The announcement was made in the States yesterday, when Economic Development Minister Alan Maclean told politicians: “It has been agreed that pubs that wish to stay open can apply for a permit under article 89 of the Licensing Law. It is important that we give pubs the opportunity to remain open for what is the most popular sporting event in the world.”
The Bailiff’s Office will announce how pubs can apply for the permits in the coming weeks.
