A comprehensive history of aviation in the Channel Islands has been published after four decades of research by the author.
Channel Islands Aviation History - From the Dawn of Flight to the Second World War is the first of two volumes of the islands’ association with aviation written by Roger E Harris, who has a strong family connection to Guernsey.
Publisher David Pettigrew said: “This fascinating book is packed with lovely old photos and is full of stories that will be interest to Channel Islanders, such as the visit of the airship R100 to Guernsey in the 1930s.
“The book has taken 40 years to come to fruition and the end result is a readable and highly illustrated book that had to be scaled down slightly from the author’s original concept of it as 560 pages, which he has ably done splitting off the more specialised aspects of the collectables associated with the subject which has been published by the Channel Islands Specialist Society in two volumes.
“Hence this volume starts with first flights, then looks at the development and trials and tribulations of scheduled services, and the founding of the Jersey Airport and the Guernsey Aerodrome.”
The 216-page volume, with more that 360 illustrations, costs £29.95 and is available to order here.
