A home for a home

Sunday 31 March 2019

A local estate agent has pledged to donate £150 to the Shelter Trust for each house it sells or rents, in a bid to help the homeless in the island.

The Shelter Trust, which is the leading provider of accommodation and support services for the homeless community in Jersey, is Le Gallais Estates' designated charity for 2019.

Robin Sappé, Le Gallais Director, hopes the donations will  help the Trust in its mission to provide a place to stay for people who, for one reason or another, have found themselves homeless.

As nobody sets out to be or to remain homeless, the main aim of the Trust is to accommodate homeless people for as short a time as is practically possible before their return to mainstream accommodation and living.

Homelessness is currently on the rise in the island, especially amongst young people under the age of 25. The Shelter Trust currently provides food, accommodation, support and help for close to 100 islanders each night at four sites in and around the town area. Last year, the Trust supported 472 individuals.

Breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper are provided for service users at three of the sites (the fourth site is self-catering), which represents 100,000 meals per year.

The cost involved continues to grow, and this is where the Le Gallais team says it hopes the donations will make a difference.

"For each property that Le Gallais receive instructions on during 2019, we pledge to donate £150.00 to the Shelter Trust when it has been either successfully let or sold by Le Gallais," Mr Sappé said.

"The cost of running the four Shelter premises operated for the homeless in Jersey is huge, and ever increasing. We hope that by making a donation on your behalf once we sell or let your property, we can support the Trust in its good work to make a home for others unable to buy or rent their own. Our Goal for this year is £10,000"
