Hospice becomes first charity to adopt Liberate’s DIFERA Scheme

Saturday 11 November 2017

Jersey Hospice Care has become the first charity in the Channel Islands to seek independent accreditation via the DIFERA Scheme, for having a diverse, fair and accepting workplace culture.

Equality charity Liberate launched DIFERA - standing for diversity, inclusion, fairness, equality, respect and acceptance - in May to assist organisations with implementing or improving their diversity and inclusion programmes.

Organisations seeking accreditation via the DIFERA Scheme provide their own policies for review by the charity and have to be willing to be audited by Liberate through an anonymised questionnaire which all staff are encouraged to respond to, so that any improvements necessary may be made and the resulting standards retained through an annual review.

XO of Liberate, Paddy Haversham-Quaid, said: "DIFERA is Liberate’s employer accreditation scheme. This is the first scheme in the Channel Islands to award organisations with a quality mark that demonstrates to employees (past, present and future), to clients and suppliers that your organisation places Diversity, Inclusion, Fairness, Equality, Respect and Acceptance at the heart of what you do.

"Forward-thinking organisations are recognising this as a business strength and are putting in place ways to become more inclusive – DIFERA supports them in that work. We are, therefore, delighted that Jersey Hospice Care is joining the DIFERA scheme and we hope that other charities will follow their lead soon to demonstrate inclusion so that they can serve ALL their clients."

Emelita Robbins, Chief Executive at Jersey Hospice Care, said: "Jersey Hospice Care is the island’s hospice and our services are available to everyone. We recognise and appreciate all of the differences that make each of us unique.

‘Upholding a culture of inclusion, one that fosters the values of DIFERA is critical to our organisation, where treating people with respect is a fundamental principle guiding everything we do. In embracing a diversity of views and experience, I believe we attract and retain the best staff and volunteers and I hope enable everyone to feel part of the Jersey Hospice Care community. Importantly, in this way I also believe we are able to deliver the best care to every islander who accesses our services. I hope our membership of the DIFERA scheme encourages others to adopt it."
