A green collection scheme that sees Christmas trees recycled as soil improver last year eliminated the need for 2,000 car journeys - and this year the charity behind it is hoping for even greater success.
With just over five weeks to go until Christmas Day, Jersey Hospice Care has opened registration for this year’s Christmas Tree Collection and Recycling initiative.
The environmentally friendly charity scheme encourages islanders to recycle their pine tree in the New Year while supporting their local hospice. Last year, more than 2,150 trees were collected by over 60 volunteers, raising a record-breaking £33,559 for Jersey Hospice Care.
Sponsored by Aztec Group for the last four years, the scheme is run entirely by volunteers. Volunteers collect Christmas trees from across the island and deliver them to green waste recycling facilities to be turned into soil improver for local gardens and farmland.

The tree-rrific fundraiser was first launched by Trevor Parker in 2005, and has since gone on to raise over £300,000 in aid of Jersey Hospice Care.
Trevor, who still coordinates the scheme, said he was looking forward to trying to beat last year's record. "After the incredible success of last year’s collections, I’m really excited to see what the island can achieve this year. I’m always blown away by the generosity and compassion that our community has to show, as well as the ongoing encouragement of businesses like Aztec Group and a host of small businesses, whose support enables us to raise a substantial amount of money for Hospice on an annual basis.
"I’m also really proud that the tree collection is environmentally friendly. Not only are all the trees turned into soil improver, but the scheme also eliminates over 2,000 individual car journeys to the green waste site and the users of the scheme save on electricity because they don’t have to hoover out their cars!"

Describing the tree recycling scheme as a "firm fixture" in Jersey Hospice Care's calendar, the charity's Income Manager, Sacha Patel, commented: "This event is a great example of the difference we can make when people come together; those who make a donation to Hospice in return for the collection of their tree, the volunteers who spend the weekend picking up and recycling the trees and the support we receive from local businesses."
To sign up for the 2018 Christmas Tree Collection and Recycling scheme for Jersey Hospice Care, islanders can register on Jersey Hospice's website. Business collections will take place on 3 and 4 January, while residential ones will follow on 5 and 6 January 2019.
