Hospital’s managing director resigns

Helen O’Shea - the managing director of Jersey’s General Hospital – has resigned for personal reasons.

In an email sent to all staff this morning Mrs O’Shea says it wasn’t an easy decision and says she’ll miss working with the team.

"Dear all, I am writing to let you know that, after much soul searching, I have tendered my resignation and will be leaving towards the end of February, 2018. Some of you may be aware that my husband has been diagnosed with a life shortening condition and we have decided to 'retire' and live life to the full whilst we still have the opportunity. I was not expecting to have to make this decision and will truly miss working here with you all. Kind regards, Helen."

Mrs O’ Shea was appointed managing director in July 2012 and is staying in post until February. Before taking up her job in Jersey she was the interim Chief Executive at Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, and before that was Chief Operating Officer and Deputy CEO for Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust between January 2010 and August 2011.

Health Minister Senator Andrew Green says her departure will be a great loss, "Clearly this is a very sad situation for Helen and her husband. There will be time later to formally say thank you to Helen who has been an outstanding hospital MD and has made a significant difference to current services as well as plans for the future hospital. Helen is respected by staff at all levels, she will be greatly missed when she retires. Meanwhile as Helen states she will be with us until February 18."

Julie Garbutt, Chief Executive of the Health and Social Services Department, said: "We have been saddened to receive Helen's resignation but respect the decision she's made. She has been a tremendous asset to the Hospital during her five years in post and will be a hard act to follow. Personally I will miss working with her very much and wish her all the best for the future."
