Housing Minister Russell Labey has announced that he is standing for re-election in St. Helier South as an independent candidate because "more factions, divisions, opposition for opposition’s sake is the last thing the Assembly needs."
The former television presenter was first elected to the States Assembly in 2014 to represent St. Helier No 1, which broadly covers the same area as South, including town, Havre des Pas and the Waterfront.
Before joining the Government, he was chair of the Privileges and Procedures Committee.
Deputy Labey said: “I’m standing as an independent candidate - more factions, divisions, opposition for opposition’s sake is the last thing the Assembly needs right now.”
He added: “I’ve asked myself many times, since my first year in office in 2014, why securing improvements for St. Helier is always such a fight with Government.
“It’s happening again with the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to double the size of the Millennium Town Park into Gas Place. I’m determined to drive this and other improvements from Green Street to the St. Saviour’s Road area and there’s plenty of fight left in me.”
Deputy Labey also said he would work with tenants and landlords to “transform our outdated Residential Tenancy Laws, making them fairer and with greater protection for both parties.”
Jersey's election is taking place on 22 June.
