Housing Minister checks out prefab housing in Poland

Jersey's Housing Minister has visited a Polish refugee camp to learn about the country's use of the latest building technologies.

Deputy David Warr returned from a three-day visit to Eastern Poland, taking part in discussions with Deputy Agnieszka Scigaj, appointed last year to the country's Council of Ministers, and officials from the Polish government.

Deputy Warr was accompanying Jersey’s Honorary Consul of the Republic of Poland, Magdalena Chmielewska, who is working with the Polish Government on an initiative to provide modular housing to Ukrainian refugees living in Poland.

The Minister visited manufacturer AleHale who are leading the project and have particular expertise in modular building technology.

Commenting on the visit's links with his recent reports on modern methods of construction and vacant properties, the Minister said: “I am committed to supporting Jersey’s construction industry with housing innovation. The project being spearheaded by Magdalena and AleHale is particularly impressive.

“It was also useful to learn more about Poland’s approach to housing policy. Clearly on a much larger scale than us in Jersey, they have their own issues with vacant properties.”

The fact-finding trip builds on a previous visit to Poland in April 2022 by the then-Chief Minister John Le Fondré, who met with the heads of Unihouse SA, a company that specialises in the construction of prefabricated modular buildings, to “assess the practicability of new and innovative building techniques and their applicability to Jersey’s context".
