How I unwind: Lauren Ivy and the Engine

Friday 29 September 2023

Have you ever wondered what a band does when the music stops?

Lauren Ivy and the Engine has been entertaining audiences on the wedding, party and corporate scene for many years now, providing high musical energy and good times with their varied set.

Backing the vocal talents of singer Lauren Ivy are experienced local musicians Paul Bisson (guitar/vocals), Richard Poignand (keys), Dave Ashurst (bass) and Timmy Bryon (drums).

On a rare night away from the stage, they have shared what they like to do to relax when the music stops.

When we want to unwind, we eat...

The last band social we had was at a Portuguese restaurant in town, where there were definitely espetadas involved. When we’re not fine-dining you’ll often find us enjoying the delights of our drummer Timmy’s takeaway kiosk out at La Hocque. Best damn bacon rolls on the Rock!

We drink...

amaretto sour

We’re a professional outfit so you’ll never catch us drinking during a gig, honest.

Away from our amplifiers, though, we’re quite a refined bunch: Lauren’s favourite cocktail is an amaretto sour; Dave likes beer; and Richard loves a single malt.

We listen to...

There’s a real love of blues, jazz and soul in the band, so you’ll often find us listening to anything along those lines.

Naturally, when there are songs to learn for an event or client request we’ll have those on loop, which recently has involved a range of musical acts from the Eurthymics, Lizzo and RAYE.

We read...

reading book

Paul’s an English teacher and insists we all keep reading diaries. Top of his at the moment is ‘Moderate Becoming Good Later’ by Katie Carr.

Other band favourites include ‘All the light we cannot see’ by Anthony Doerr which Lauren can’t put down. Our keyboardist Richard is currently reading ‘How to Survive' by John Hudson.

We do...

dishwasher

Anything that keeps us grounded in the real world and stops us getting swept away by local pop stardom.

For Timmy, this is unloading the dishwasher, for Paul, it’s picking up after his kids. Lauren likes to binge watch the latest series on Netflix, whilst Richard enjoys a gangster movie or anything with David Attenborough.
