How will your local history fare at Library fayre?

Saturday 23 January 2016

Local history authors and experts are preparing to help you go back in time and find out more about Jersey’s past and your own family history today.

They’ll be at the Island’s first Local History Fayre at Jersey Library.

The Senior Librarian for Information Services Julie O’Grady said: “Jersey has a wonderful, varied history full of intrigue and momentous events. The Fayre will give like-minded people a unique opportunity to get together to talk about fascinating points in our past or to learn more about a subject that has caught their interest. It promises to be a very enjoyable and educational weekend.”

Jersey Library, Jersey Archive, Channel Islands Family History Society, L’Office du Jèrriais, Channel Island Bus Society, Channel Islands Great War Study Group, Channel Islands Occupation Society, Jersey Postcard Study Group and the Societe Jersiaise History Section are all taking part in the Fayre today.

Workshops are being held from 10 am to 12 pm so that you can learn more about using the library's family history resources including Ancestry, Forces War Records, Find my Past and British Newspaper Archive.

Education Minister Deputy Rod Bryans said: “This is another good initiative from the Jersey Library team that will engage the public in a new way and enable people to come together and explore the Island’s rich history.”

A series of talks are planned for today:

  • 10:30am          Paul Darroch on his book Jersey: Hidden histories

  • 12:30pm          Jersey Archives talk on Family History at Jersey Archive

  •  2:30pm           Alasdair Crosby on Grub Street – the long view: reflections on popular journalism in Jersey.
