Jersey’s cricketers step closer to World Cup

Monday 15 August 2022

Jersey’s men’s cricket team are another step closer to competing in the 2023 World Cup.

It’s the first time the island has made it through to the World Cup play-offs, but the ultimate prize of competing in the tournament itself, is still some way off.

In a long and complex process, Jersey now have to finish first or second in the play-offs - a six-team tournament - to progress to the next round.

And, after that, they again have to come first or second, this time in a ten-team tournament, the Qualifier, that is being held in Zimbabwe next year, before they make it to the World Cup which is being held in India later in 2023.

The pathway to the final, with all its twists and turns, in some way reflects the convoluted journey Jersey has been on so far to get to this stage.

On Sunday, although Jersey lost their final group stage match to Kenya, during the rest of the tournament their run rate had been good enough for them to top the table and progress further.

On Friday Jersey beat Bermuda by 206 runs, and on Saturday, in a crucial match, Italy by 145 runs.
