Firefighters battled through the early morning on Saturday to tackle a huge fire at Les Landes.
There were 14 firefighters at the scene from just after 3.41 am – the fire service said it was the largest open land fire of the year.
At the point that they got to the blaze, the fire already covered an area of 200 metres by 30 metres.
Firefighters deployed a full response, sending out two Fire Appliances and a water carrier from Rouge Bouillon, and a further appliance of on-call firefighters from the western station.
The fire itself was under control and not spreading further within an hour, but crew remained at the scene throughout the early morning damping down the area so that it did not flare up again.
Watch Commander Richard Ryan said: “The cause of the blaze is unknown and is under investigation.”
